Health Issues and my Old PC

doctorIf you noticed that I haven’t posted anything for quite a while, it was because for the whole month of September, I was not feeling as well as I should and it took me a while before I finally went to see my doctor. I thought I just needed a little rest and all the sluggishness and shortness of breath will just go away but apparently it did not.

After getting some tests, they found out that my cholesterol levels were far from normal and my uric acid was over the roof. Luckily, they didn’t find anything wrong with my heart. I’ve been taking meds for the past two months and hopefully things will be back to normal.

The crappy thing about all these is that medicine in the Philippines cost an arm and a leg. Just like gas prices, they are ridiculously over priced. I’ll be spending several thousands for the next months to come. I’ll be staying away from meats and fatty food. Although I don’t usually indulge in them, maybe it’s my sedentary lifestyle that added to the equation.

Anyway, I just had my tests second week of November and all is back to normal. I’m feeling a better now. I don’t get tired easily the way I did before. It’s just the change of diet and exercise that I’m getting to get the hang of. I’ll just have to follow the doctor’s orders to stay away from meat, fatty food and change my diet to more veggies and fruits.

While I was feeling crappy, my PC of four years was getting to be a pain. It would just hang or would refuse to boot. After screwing with it for a while, I thought I solved the problem by getting a new ram. It worked for a few days then it went back to its old problem. I tried to get hold of a motherboard that would hold the AMD Athlon XP processor but apparently they discontinued manufacturing it anymore.

Suddenly I was left with no choice but to appease the upgrade god. That set me off around $300 (P15,000). Luckily, I had a little help from my dear ol’ sis. But still, I couldn’t get hold of the top of the line processor. With a small budget, I had to settle with Intel’s 2gig dual core E2180, Asus P5nsli motherboard, 2gig of ram, a 160gig sata hard disk and a 500w power supply. I also replaced my mouse since the old one was acting funny. It would just click on the start button and click everything it finds there.

I just finished using fdisk, formatted the new hard disk and started reinstalling everything. From the OS, drivers, to all the applications I was using. I would cross my fingers with each app install since the CDs were a bit old and with some, I even had to clean since my CD-rom drive could not read the contents anymore. So far so good, hopefully I could retrieve some of my files from my old drive.

With my recent upgrade, I hope this will last for more than 5 years before the upgrade god would come knocking on my door again. Hopefully by that time, I would have shifted to more open source applications for my software needs so I wouldn’t get stuck with old CDs and its contents disappearing to oblivion.
