If you’re like me, whose attention span is akin to a 3 yr old, listening to crappy music and crappy yaps by djs on the local radio stations makes my skin crawl. How many times have you heard the ‘kelangan i-memorize crap tag’ being repeated ad nauseum? They think it’s cute. Well, it’s crap really, a full load of!
Thank God there’s a solution to this idiocy! To radio station owners, not all listeners are morons, to put it mildly.
Most local stations here are trapped in a time warp. One in the 50’s-60’s, majority are in the 70’s and early 80’s, all jazz stations here are copying each other, too smooth to handle, again trapped in the late 70’s. There’s one rock station and a sprinkle of hip-hop here and there and that’s about it.
Lately, I’ve been having trouble listening to my radio station - http://anitobopper.googlepages.com/finally%2Cmyownradiostation%21 . I’m not really sure if the site is not streaming as it should or my isp is choking the bandwidth, to accommodate more subscribers? Anyway, I won’t bore you to death with all these litanies.
My solution to limited choices on local radio stations is to listen to free radio streams on the net. You can choose from a variety of genres and styles, from top hits, rock, reggae, 80’s music, real jazz, smooth jazz, chillout and a lot more.
I came across a several sites that you might be interested in:
http://www.sky.fm/ This site has all the choices you might need – from rock to jazz and anything in between. For those who have been brainwashed into thinking that there’s only one type of music, i.e. crappy music, folks there are other music choices out there. All you have to do is expand your horizons.
If you’re into downtempo electronica, soft trip hop, ambient, lounge and nu-jazz, just click on http://www.calmscape.com/index.php
You’ll be guided to several stations that may suit your fancy.
If you’re into real jazz, you can choose from a variety of stations here - http://jazz.about.com/od/jazzinternetradio/Internet_Radio_The_Best_Jazz_Radio_St reams_on_the_Web.htm I’ve tried around 3-4 stations and settled for KJAZZ 88.1 FM.
They play around 2-3 selections then the dj talks about the artist and anything you need to know about the music. Other jazz stations have a lot of news and other distractions other than the music.
There are probably a lot more but just rummaging through each could take a lot of your time so this is all for now. Currently I’m alternately listening to http://somafm.com/ groove salad and KJAZZ 88.1 FM while writing this article.
Oh btw, you need to have Windows Media player, WinAmp, iTunes, Real player or any similar application so that you can listen to the stream live. A broadband connection also helps in making it stream without too much hiccups. Enjoy!
